Who we are
The University of Alabama was founded in 1831 as our state’s flagship of higher learning. Today, we are the fastest-growing flagship university in the country. Our outstanding faculty members instruct students in 13 schools and colleges.
UA’s historic campus includes more than 1,000 acres and is routinely named one of the most beautiful college campuses in the nation. In the past 10 years, we have added more than 90 new facilities.
In Fall 2016, our enrollment was 37,665, including more than 32,000 undergraduates and just over 5,000 graduate and professional students. We welcomed 7,559 freshmen this fall—our largest and most qualified freshman class ever. We currently have more than 600 National Merit Scholars enrolled on our campus. More than 40 percent of the 2016 freshmen scored a 30 or above on the ACT. More than 31 percent had a 4.0 or better high school GPA.
